As I begin writing this new series, it is raining, rather it is pouring. This is a part of spring! Is spring a season that you look forward to? Even though there are many who enjoy the winter months (I am not included in that bunch), by winter's end, I think many can say, they are a bit eager for a little more sunshine.
Winter is a time where many things in nature go dormant. While autumn brings it's crispy leaves and vibrant colors, winter brings bareness. For those who live where it snows, it can be a pretty sight as it glistens in the meadows and trees. Yet, in many places things look dull. The branches are bear, the grass has turned brown, the plants have faded away. Just when it seems we will grow tired of the cold, dreary days, we see a glimmer of an awakening, a fresh blade of grass, a tiny bud that will blossom into a leaf, a new scent of freshness in the air.
It is amazing how God made the seasons. Each season, even though some may be hard to tolerate, has its purpose. Can we not liken our lives as different seasons we go through? As with winter, we may go through trials of discouragement. Like spring, a new hope starts forming in the heart. With summer, a time of peace and rest. Likewise, fall may represent a time of hardship or change. For each one though, we have a Creator who sustains us through them all.
Spring indicates newness. For one who doesn't like winter much, I look forward to spring. I enjoy looking around seeing all the new buds, all the new flowers blooming. Every tree or flowering plant bringing forth its fruit of the season. There are numerous verses that compare our spiritual walk to the likeness of bearing fruit or bringing forth fruit in due season. As we obey and abide in the LORD and His Word we will bear the fruit of wisdom, grace, mercy, faith, love, and many more attributes of godliness. Psalm 1 is a reminder of what happens when we delight in the LORD.
Psalm 1:1-3, Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,
nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But
his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in His law doth he meditate day and
night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth
forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he
doeth shall prosper.
In the next few weeks we will be looking more closely at scripture that calls us to bear fruit and how we can do just that. May God bless you as you continue in His Word, learning and growing in His mercy, grace, and love.
In His Truth,
